The Berlinale Film Festival
Some words about it...
Berlin - is an exciting, cosmopolitan capital,
a city of culture with the international appeal.
And in there - in the heart of it - is the Berlinale -
not only Berlin's largest cultural event, and one of the most
important dates that belongs to the international film industry's
calendar. Every year near 20,000 film professionals that come
from 120 countries, including 4,100 journalists, are accredited
for the International Film Festival that is in Berlin. The Berlinale
is truly a great event. And it is also a festival of encounters and
discussions. It enjoys by far the largest audience of film festivals
in the whole world. For 2 weeks, glamour, art, business and parties
meet at the Berlinale.
A Wide World of Film
More than 400 films are shown as part of the Festival's public programme every year,
the majority of which are European or world premieres. So, films of every genre, format
and length can be submitted for consideration. The Festival is divided into many different
sections with unique profile: great international films in the Competition, art-house and
independent productions in Panorama, films specially for a young audience that in the Generation
section, and the most exciting German film productions in Perspektive Deutsches Films,
experimental forms in the famous International Forum of New Cinema and also an in-depth
look at different films from "distant" countries.
Showing, enabling, initiating...
The Berlin International Festival sees itself as a huge showcase for what is happening in
the international cinema, but also as a propagator and actor on the film circuit. And whether
through film series, panels, workshops and even thematic collaborations with the other cultural
players - the Berlinale Festival offers countless forms of creative interaction and co-operation.
In terms of the thematic focal points and the forms of presentation, the Berlinale festival
is at the meeting point of the possible and the available. This fundamental openness for any
new idea and solutions, surprising lateral connections and for unconventional formats also finds
expression in initiatives which are permanently embedded in this famous festival. Such as the
Berlinale Co-Production Market, that, associated to the European Movie Market, provides territory
for international co-productions; and the World Cinema Fund, a joint initiative with the great
German Federal Cultural Foundation. The whole idea and aim of this support mechanism is that the
realisation of film projects in the countries that are structurally disadvantaged and strengthening
their positions in the international film industry. And the Fund's activities continue through
the year and stretch far beyond the festival itself.
The Berlin Spirit
Artists from the whole world are attracted to Berlin and of course many consider Berlin the
unofficial capital of all German films. It is home to a wonderful cinema scene and a discerning public.
So, last but not least, Berlin has captured imagination of countless filmmakers.
And over and over again, this city has served as the backdrop for the great silver screen productions,
and often even becoming itself the secret protagonist of the film. Think "film" and "Berlin"
is bound to just spring to mind. For 2 weeks every year Berlin is enraptured by the Berlinale
Film Festival.
